1.2. Relationship to Other Specifications
This section describes how this Implementation Guide (IG) relates to other specifications, standards, and profiling strategies.
1.2.1. Referencing
- Ontario EHR release 1.0.0
- The Ontario EHR standards provide the profile for base and non-clinical resources. These profiles are used either as direct use (i.e. Organization) or as base definition of the IAR resources (i.e. OperationOutcome, Patient). These profiles follow the harmonized structure definitions and data expectations that are supported at the provincial level.
- CA Core+ v1.1.0-DFT-preBallot and CA Baseline 1.2.0
- For extensions not defined in the Ontario EHR—such as ethnicity, sex, gender identity, or indigenous identity in the Patient profile—the CA Core+ standard serves as the reference, inheriting most extensions from CA Baseline. These specifications are harmonized, and no conflicts in extension usage are observed.
- HL7 FHIR Base R4
- HL7 FHIR Base R4 provides the foundational profiles for IAR data exchanges where no suitable profile has been defined at the Ontario or pan-Canadian level, or where an existing profile was deemed not fit for use within the IAR context. These include QuestionnaireResponse, MessageHeader, Location, Encounter, and Bundle.
1.2.2. Profiling Strategy
- Ontario EHR release 1.0.0
- Similar to CA Core+ profiles, which provide reusable, high-quality, and standardized data structures that facilitate interoperability across healthcare systems and jurisdictions in Canada, Ontario EHR profiles were developed to support common reusable FHIR artifacts for OH FHIR APIs for harmonization and consistency, and will continue to evolve over time.
