Use Case - Introduction

Problem / Opportunity

There is a core set of information about a patient’s medical conditions and treatment that is of value to any health care provider within the patient’s circle of care. This information is curated typically by the patient’s family physician or a specialist providing longitudinal care, but is not readily accessible in electronic format outside of that physician’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR). The patient is then often responsible for remembering and communicating relevant information to other providers at time of care. Alberta Patient Summary (PS-AB) Release 1 will provide the capability for a standard set of patient medical data to be submitted from a healthcare provider in a longitudinal care relationship with that patient, for publication in Alberta Netcare where it can be readily viewed by any other healthcare professionals involved in the patient’s care.

Scope

The scope of this functionality includes submission of curated data elements from healthcare provider EMRs into a provincial service, formation of a standard patient summary textual report from the submitted data, and publication of the patient summary report to Alberta Netcare, Alberta’s provincial EHR. Where feasible and appropriate, these requirements will leverage existing functional capabilities within any component of the end-to-end solution.
