Business Model

Context

The Patient Summary is intended to inform patient care. It contains essential clinical information that enables a common view and understanding of the patient’s medical state and may be used by health care providers to support effective clinicial decision-making and coordination of care across any setting where a patient may be assessed or treated.

Conceptual Architecture

The Alberta Patient Summary Solution will allow Point of Service (PoS) systems such as Electronic Medical Record (EMR) systems to contribute Patient Summaries to a provincial repository. The Patient Summary Solution will provide a set of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) to allow PoS systems to submit Patient Summaries. The specification provides interoperability for two primary data exchange transactions:

Transmission of Patient Summary to Alberta Netcare

  • A Patient Summary is assembled from data contained in the provider’s clinical record of care.
  • A Patient Summary is sent to Alberta Netcare ecosystem.

Transmission of Patient Summary to Consumers

  • A Patient summary is published to other consumers (e.g. hospital CIS, jurisdictional EHR/CIS).
  • NOTE: Within the central data exchange hub, the contents are validated and may be transformed as needed when publishing to a given consumer class.
  • NOTE: For publication in the Alberta Netcare Portal, the discrete data will be incorporated into a standardized textual layout and published as a text document (such as a PDF). This is out of scope of this specification.
