Basics and Overview

In adapting the FHIR interface, the fundamental idea was that the resource model and the specification of the individual resources should be based on models and specifications developed nationally (e.g. laboratory report, MIO laboratory findings) and internationally (e.g. EU laboratory report). The overarching goal is to ensure interoperability where possible between the various uses. This principle also applies to the provision of value sets.

In principle, the specified FHIR resources must be used for ARS. With regard to mapping the contents of microbiological diagnostics, the value sets and the provided guidance for handling semantics serve as recommendations. If your Laboratory Information System (LIS) already uses other rules, and microbiological diagnostics can still be represented clearly and coherently, the use of alternative codes will not prevent data transmission to ARS. This is reflected in the binding definitions specified within the FHIR resources.
