Información sobre un encuentro de atención en el cual un paciente es admitido formalmente a una institución prestadora de servicios de salud (IPS) para recibir atención médica continua durante un periodo prolongado, que generalmente requiere al menos una noche de estancia, bajo supervisión clínica permanente.
Este tipo de encuentro se utiliza para tratar condiciones de salud que no pueden resolverse adecuadamente en un entorno ambulatorio o de urgencias, y que requieren monitoreo, intervenciones médicas, quirúrgicas, farmacológicas o de rehabilitación dentro de un entorno institucional.
