Overview
This Ontario eReferral FHIR Implementation Guide (IG) was written to support implementers of systems that will use HL7 FHIR to support the electronic transfer of information when patients are referred from one healthare service provider to another in the province of Ontario.
Background
Clinicians in Ontario need to be able to refer patients to the care they need, anywhere in the province in a fair and consistent manner. Current paper based referrals and disconnected electronic systems are a significant barrier to this.
Electronic Referral (eReferral) simplifies the referral process by enhancing communication between primary care providers, specialists and other healthcare service providers enabling quick and secure referrals to be sent, received and managed through an electronic platform.
Content and Organization
The implementation guide is organized into the following sections:
- Business Context includes pages that provide an overview of the business model, business data, use cases and business rules that this implementation guide supports
- Implementation Guidance includes pages that provide high level guidance to implementers related to the responsibility of participating systems, conformance rules, connectivity and response handling
- Technical Specifications includes pages with technical background information including related specifications that developers should read and understand and formal specifications for SMART integrations and direct messaging with detailed description of implementation requirements and conformance expectation
- FHIR Artifacts provides context for and links to FHIR artifacts that provide explicit, computable definitions of the required capabilities of different systems including message definitions, and profiles
- Terminology provides a full list of terminology artifacts used in this IG with a revision history
- Downloads allows download of this and other specifications as well as other useful tools
