The type of tool used to measure pain in the ICU:

Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), Behavioural Pain Scale (BPS), Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT), or Critically Ill Assessment scale (CIA) In principle, pain is measure by VAS, NRS or CIA. If a patient is sedated, BPS or CPOT can also be used. If no pain score could be taken during the entire shift, for a reason other than sedation, for example because the patient is delirious or suffering from severe dementia, or had an EMV<8 or mental disability, select option 7. This value of 7 may not be used for any other reason, such as ‘patient was being transferred’.

If you always use a different measurement tool, select ‘Other (6)’. Only use 'Pain score could not be taken (7)' if no pain score can be measured for a reason other than sedation, for example if the patient is delirious or suffering from severe dementia, or had an EMV<8 or mental disability.
