Business Model

Many organizations across BC provide community health care services and require access to current and accurate information. The role of the VPP Community ODS is to serve as an authoritative source of patient community health care information to:

  • reduce manual efforts related to maintaining patient information within point of care systems and repositories

  • improve accuracy of patient information by providing EHR contributors access to the most-up-to-date provider information

  • reduce exception-handling for patient correspondence (e.g. returned fax/mail)

  • support authentication and authorization of patients when providing or accessing information in Ontario’s EHR

Model

The VPP Community ODS maintains a comprehensive source of patient community information received from different contributing sources, including:

  • PARIS

  • Profile EMR

  • Pixalere

  • MoH Provider and Location Registry (PLR)

  • MoH Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI)

The identifiers and demographic information maintained in the VPP Community ODS is then used by other community healthcare service providers to associate this patient information with their own patient information. The patient information is also made available to authorized organizations through multiple query service endpoints.
