Introduction

This FHIR R4 implementation guide provides guidance on modeling ICU data in FHIR R4 to ensure interoperability: interpretable and scalable secondary use of the data, particularly for use in clinical intelligence applications for the ICU.

It is primarily intended for business intelligence staff and application managers from hospitals but may also be relevant for ICU clinicians.

Background

The knowledge incorporated into this implementation guide comes from practical implementations of Pacmed Critical. Similar FHIR-related questions were addressed during the implementation of Pacmed Critical in different hospitals, sparking the idea of documenting this knowledge into the FHIR implementation guide.

Scope and Use Cases

The data profiled in this implementation guide is selected based on the first Pacmed Critical intelligence application: AI-based clinical decision support for the question of whether an ICU patient can be safely discharged to a lower-level care unit.

The aim is to extend this implementation guide with data required for other clinical intelligence applications for the ICU.

Status and Perspectives

This implementation guide is still in draft form. The goal is to further develop it, if possible, together with other parties.
