Terminology
CodeSystems
CodeSystems define the set of codes from which values in a ValueSet are drawn. These represent the underlying source of meaning for coded data used in Coding elements. In CA Core+, CodeSystems are used to anchor both pan-Canadian and jurisdictional terminologies, including those defined specifically for this guide (e.g., task status, jurisdictional codes), as well as widely adopted external code systems like SNOMED CT, LOINC, and CCI.
Each CodeSystem entry in this guide includes a canonical URL, identifier, and human-readable description. These systems are referenced by profiles throughout the CA Core+ guide, typically in required or preferred bindings to support consistent interpretation of coded data.
While CA Core+ reuses many external CodeSystems, it may also define internal systems to support CA-specific workflow or classification needs. These are documented below and will be updated in future releases as additional modules are published.
CodeSystem | Description |
---|---|
CommunicationBarrierSystem | Contains business-specific nuances of the task business state. |
TaskBusinessStatusSystem | Contains codes required to identify if the patient speaks/understands an offical language (english/french). |
ValueSets
ValueSets are intended for use where there are a specific list of codes which must be used to represent given content in a codeableConcept
element. These can be found in many of the resources profiled in this IG and will be linked from the FHIR resource table on the element. Visit the CodeableConcept (CA-Core) and it's child Coding (CA-Core) pages to learn more about how valuesets can be used with the Codeable Concept Element. It is recommended that readers review the the Profiling Conventions & Approach page for more information on how codeableConcept
data elements are used in this CA Core+.
In a future update more guidance will be added on retrieving normative versions of these valuesets from the Infoway Teriminology Server.
Several ValueSets are not available at their canonical URL (e.g., NVC published value sets, canonicals starting with fhir.infoway-inforoute.ca). For several of these ValueSets, "stub" resources have been created to stand-in for the unresolvable ValueSets. These stub ValueSets include pointers to the locations where the full value sets can be browsed or downloaded, typically from the Canadian Terminology Service.
In a future release, after canonical URLs are resolving, the respective stub ValueSets will be removed.
