SMART on FHIR

Substitutable Medical Applications and Reusable Technologies (SMART on FHIR) is a healthcare standard that allows applications to access clinical information available from data systems by defining a set of reusable foundational patterns based on OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect.

For apps to be substitutable and reusable across a range of different data systems there is a need consistent ways to do a few different things:

  • securely access data from an EMR/POS (SMART on FHIR)
  • represent information exchanged and used with apps (FHIR profiles)
  • search for and retrieve data (FHIR RESTful interactions and operations
