Scope of Guide

Overview

The national Patient Summary specification (that this guide is a part of) is intended to outline the various implementation and transaction patterns that are available to participating Canadian provinces and territories to implement and further define within their own jurisdictions.

Solution developers should review the PS-CA Specifications landing page to understand the full breadth of the specification and its supporting documents.

This PS-CA FHIR® Implementation Guide specifies constraints on the content of a Patient Summary document. The guide points to specific content within the PS-CA Specification where it is helpful in understanding how that content data model is applied. For example, readers should familiarize themselves with the Actors and Transactions as detailed in the PS-CA Actor Conformance which details how the Patient Summary documents can be exchanged across a variety of architectural options, transaction patterns, actors.

Scope of this Guide

This guide focuses on presenting solution developers with the information necessary to implement the content data model into their systems, so that they might construct and/or receive a PS-CA-compliant Patient Summary.

The intent of the content data model is to define each data element, cardinality, data type, constraints, and code system references—all of the details needed for two systems to be semantically interoperable with each other and securely share the Patient Summary-CA.

Unlike FHIR implementation guides that focus on interactions with a specific service or API, this guide does not provide details on security expectations, API connectivity information, example queries & operations, etc. Those considerations and behaviors are documented in the PS-CA Specification.
