How to construct the Ambulance Data Set MVP FHIR Bundle

The Ambulance Data Set MVP FHIR Bundle is constructed as follows:

  • There will always be one Communication resource to hold details of the call

  • There will be as many Encounter resources as there are patient contacts (as the Encounter resource only allows for a single Patient reference - this may repeat some Encounter information) Patient resources as there are patient contacts

  • Each call sign will have a AmbulanceResponseVehicle-Location resource to hold its call sign identifier

  • Each different location that Patient(s) are conveyed to will be represented by a Receiving-Location resource

  • The submitting and provider organisations are represented by an Organisation resource (this may be the same resource if they are the same organisation, otherwise 2 resources).

There is a diagrammatical representation of the references here ADSMVP (note that this picture shows 3 Encounter resources for a single Communication).

The following are the references within the FHIR profiles.

From Communication

Reference To Reference Element Notes
Encounter Communication.about.reference@value One per patient encounter
Organisation (submitter) Communication.sender.reference@value
Organisation (provider) Communication.recipient.reference@value

From Encounter

Reference To Reference Element Notes
Receiving-Location Encounter.hospitalization.destination.reference@value For the conveyed to destination
AmbulanceResponseVehicle-Location Encounter.location.location.reference@value For the call sign
Patient Encounter.subject.reference@value

Additional note

There are different ways to reference resources in FHIR, and some of the Ambulance Data Set examples in this guide might use the format below in single resource examples e.g. for an Encounter or Communication resource:

        <reference value="Patient/b6256eda-a021-11ea-bb37-0242ac130002" />

This referencing format has been used as the example resource is being presented on its own and not within a Bundle.

If however the example resource was included in an ADS FHIR Bundle, along with the Patient resource for the subject, that reference would be presented as:

        <reference value="urn:uuid:b6256eda-a021-11ea-bb37-0242ac130002" />
