## Direct API Method

The "Direct" API integration method for sending eReferrals involves the direct transmission of referral information via an HL7 FHIR RESTful JSON API. The integratin is programatic and happens in the back end of systems which are responsible for providing their own user interfaces and business logic for handling the data.

It is the responsibility of the host application to present the interface to the user (unlike the SMART method, where it is the responsibility of the server to present the interface).
